2 Day Excursion Itinerary

Day 1

Our guide will meet you at your hotel at 10 am and take you to The State Museum of the Defense and Blockade of Leningrad is tiny by comparison but its subject matter makes this compelling viewing. Dedicated to the city’s historical siege and defence of Leningrad during the Second World War, moving displays show the famine-ravaged city and the heroic efforts made to somehow get food in from beyond the blockade. More than one million people died during the blockade. Their sacrifice and the extraordinary endurance of the survivors remains a source of both immense pride and profound sorrow.

Next we will We’ll move on to the Museum of Political History of Russia where our guided visit will uncover the story of the revolution. Created in 1919 by prominent figures in the Bolshevik Party members of the narodnik (populist) movement and representatives of the intelligentsia it was the first museum in the country to engage with historical and revolutionary issues. To this day it remains a fascinating collection and our tour will help you understand how modern Russia has evolved.

We will stop for a traditional Russian lunch.

The afternoon will be a trip to the Battleship Aurora where it all started.

you’ll visit the recently-restored museum ship of the Aurora Cruiser, which played an important role in the Russian Revolution of 1917.

Aurora is a Russian protected cruiser, currently preserved as a museum ship in Saint Petersburg. Aurora was one of three Pallada-class cruisers, built in Saint Petersburg for service in the Pacific Ocean. All three ships of this class served during the Russo-Japanese War.

End the day at the Peter and Paul Fortress, which is St. Petersburg’s original citadel that has stood guard over the city since 1706. Wander through the historical walls of the fortress as you take in the beautiful architecture, burial vaults of the Emperors, and dark cells of the prison.

Day 2

Our guide will meet you at your hotel at 10.00am and take you to discover the multi-faceted aspects of Soviet life as you take this tour to learn about the reality of a Soviet leader versus that of a worker.

The first stop is Kirov’s Flat Museum, which was the apartment of Sergei Kirov, head of the Communist Party in Leningrad. Kirov was a close friend of Stalin and his assassination in 1934 provided the pretext for Stalin’s Great Terror of 1937 – 1938. This museum offers a fascinating insight into the lives of the Soviet elite and Communist leaders.

Next, you’ll get the chance to see how others lived under Stalin’s rule as you visit the Anna Akhmatova Flat. Anna Akhmatova is one of the most significant Soviet poets of the 20th century, who lost her son and husband during Stalin’s Great Terror.

Walk through this kommunalka (communal flat), whose cramped quarters were an integral part of Soviet life. The contrast between this apartment and Kirov’s will be an eye-opening and stark representation of the very different realities between the Soviet people and their leaders.

We will stop for a traditional Russian lunch.

For the rest of today’s Russian Revolution and Soviet Leningrad tour will show you several significant sites around St. Petersburg: Smolny, Tauride, the Putilov Factory, Kresty Prison, and the NKVD / FSB (aka the Soviet Secret Police) building.

You can expect to be back to your hotel around 6/7pm in the evening.
